Building a team can be an enormous challenge. I have built many teams and to me it is clear that a good team starts with clear communications of expectations and perceptions. Many people are very held back when it comes to showing their needs and -most of all- fears. Whether it is a new team to be formed or a team that needs re-energizing, it comes down to creating the right framework for the team, the job and the cause. And the best way to do this, is leading by example. Team building is not just about having an event and going back to business as usual, it is about making the team tick.

Make a team tick

What is the secret to “make a team tick”? When trying to explain, I often use the similarities between ‘work’ and ‘play’. Work and Skydiving are among my passions. And both can be seen as a team sport. When jumping out of a perfectly working airplane -to many people unimaginable- it comes down to preparation-trust-being interdependent-accepting each other’s qualities and flaws. Excuses are futile. Excuses are the bearer of injuries, or worse.

So in a team you must be able to trust each other, accept the fact that you are interdependent and will only succeed together and that the guy next to you has his strengths but also his flaws. When you prepare successfully, you are prepared for success.
